ValueTypes

A ValueType describes the type of data that can be stored in a particular fieldFieldA property of a DataElement expanded to a database column and user interface input element. of a DataElement. It specifies the format of the data and different representations in the various layersLayerLogical separation of functionality within a single system/application, focused on code organization. of the ApplicationApplicationThe overarching model container grouping all components, domain logic, and configurations for an enterprise solution..

A ValueType configures how:

  • data is rendered in the user interface
  • data is stored in the database
  • data is validated in the business logic (i.e. value restrictions or custom business rules)

The most common ValueTypes such as Text, Number, BigString are provided by default. Other concerns might introduce their own custom ValueTypes that might change how they are rendered or add custom validation.

Provided types

TypeDescription
StringA string value up to 255 characters.
BigStringA string value up to 16384 characters.
BooleanA boolean (true/false) value.
IntegerA 32-bit signed integer value.
LongA 64-bit signed integer value.
DoubleA double-precision floating-point value.
DateDate values without time.
TimestampDate values with time.
ByteArrayAn array of byte values. Often used to represent binary data.
ShortA 16-bit signed integer value.
MarkupStringThis type extends BigString, but also adds a rich-text editor in the Knockout UI.
Text valuetype

In addition to the types above, we also provide the ValueType Text. This type is the base type for all types that represent a string value, but it does not provide any information or constraints in the model (such as maximum length) and should therefore not be used as a type for any fieldFieldA property of a DataElement expanded to a database column and user interface input element.. This means that there's no way to ensure consistent use across different implementations.

When used in a JEE applicationApplicationThe overarching model container grouping all components, domain logic, and configurations for an enterprise solution., Text fieldsFieldA property of a DataElement expanded to a database column and user interface input element. will only be constrained by whatever the persistence provider decides is the default translation for any given type of database. Any error that might occur due to (for example) size limits, will only occur at the last step of handling the data, when it has already reached the database.
